What Is AI? A Five-Year-Old Explanation

This week, I’ll be focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

There’s been so much noise about AI lately. Most Nigerian users on X are always quick to ask Grok (X’s AI agent). ChatGPT has literally become a verb.

But wait…

What the hell is AI?

Artificial Intelligence. Hmm 🤔

Let’s break it down like we’re explaining it to a 5-year-old.

AI is simply the ability of machines to learn and make decisions on their own.

So who is teaching them?

Data.

Yes—data 😄

Machines learn from data. For example, if you give a machine thousands of pictures of a cat, it studies patterns—ears, eyes, shape, fur. Over time, it learns what a cat looks like. That’s why it can later recognize a cat it has never seen before.

👉 Key takeaway: AI learns from data.

According to Sigmund Freud, humans are born tabula rasa—an empty slate.

We become intelligent by learning from our parents, school, friends, society, and everything we are exposed to.

Pause for a moment and think about that.

The same way humans learn and become intelligent is exactly what machines are now doing—but at a much faster scale.

This is why ChatGPT feels like a genius that knows “almost everything.”

The more things you learn, the smarter you become, right?

Now here’s the craziest part 👇

Unlike humans, computers can be trained with almost unlimited amounts of data. That’s what makes them incredibly powerful—and potentially smarter than any single human could ever be.

So the real question is…

Is AI a blessing or a curse? 😌
